For decades, informal links produced a steady stream of immigrants from Italy. Family and friends from particular villages would join relatives who could offer work and accommodation. Those living in New Zealand would often return to collect wives or relatives. Several settlements, such as the tomato-growing community in Nelson, developed around kinship and work.
