
Brown soils extend throughout the country wherever the climate is moist. With the addition of fertiliser, they provide much of the land used for sheep, beef and dairy farming. Podzols exist where the climate is wet, and with appropriate drainage and fertiliser also provide productive farmland. Pallic soils were formed from loess under a summer-dry climate and are used mostly for sheep farming. The driest soils are the semi-arid soils, formed where there is an annual rainfall of less than 500 millimetres.
