Murray Ball produced ‘Footrot Flats’, his most famous creation, from 1976 until 1994. The widely syndicated strip revolved around the comedy duo of farmer Wal’ Footrot and his Dog, with a cast of secondary characters including neighbour Cooch Windgrass, Wal’s aunt Dolly, his girlfriend Darlene ‘Cheeky’ Hobson, his neighbours the Murphys, and a number of aggressive, lazy, scary, irritating and amorous animals. The originals of the strips, which can be viewed on the official Footrot Flats website, were deposited in the Alexander Turnbull Library by the Ball family in 2022.
