Click on this map for details of the 31 local newspapers that Joseph Ivess is thought to have owned or co-owned between 1868 and 1907. Irish-born Ivess was perhaps the most energetic of NZ's 'rag-planters', or founders of small local papers, known as 'rags'. As well as the titles shown here, he may have had at least a part interest in a further 15 publications in New Zealand and several more in Australia. Ivess combined newspaper ownership with a political career. He became MP for Īnangahua in 1872, when he owned the district's only newspaper. He later held a variety of other elected posts, ensuring that his newspapers prominently reported his issues and campaigns.
