In 1925 cameraman Ted Coubray collaborated with visiting Danish director Gustav Pauli. They made two films together, Under the Southern Cross and The romance of Hine-moa (both 1927). Under the Southern Cross is the rural love story of young English migrant David Byne and Hazel Carlisle, who manages a Hawke's Bay sheep farm with her brother.
