Chris Slane and Robert Sullivan took the well-known story of the Polynesian demigod Māui and turned it into a short graphic novel for children called Maui: legends of the outcast, published in 1997. In this section, Māui forces his grandmother, Murirangawhenua, to give him her jawbone in exchange for food. He goes on to use the jawbone, which possesses sacred powers, to fish up the North Island of New Zealand, Te Ika-a-Māui.
