Most popular sports, 2007–8

File size

This graph shows the most popular sports by participation for women, men and all adults (aged 18 or over) in 2007/8.  The figures record the numbers who had participated in each sport during the previous 12 months.  What is surprising is the widespread participation in golf, a largely individualistic sport, and the numbers who played touch rugby.  The comparatively low popularity of rugby as a participant sport is also striking, although these graphs do not record spectatorship or interest.
