Mark Todd and Charisma

This clip shows Mark Todd and Charisma competing in the cross country and showjumping rounds of the individual eventing competition at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. After the dressage they were placed first, a placing they retained with a clear round in the cross country. Despite losing one rail in the show jumping , they won the gold, beating Ian Stark from Britain, who is shown here (in the red jacket) looking slightly anxious. This was the pair's second Olympic gold, following their win at Los Angeles in 1984, and they also were part of the team that took the bronze medal at Seoul.

Charisma, also known as 'Podge', was only 15.3 hands high, small for a horse competing at this level. He came back from Seoul and was toured around New Zealand for six months before retiring to Todd's farm in Cambridge. He was euthanased in 2003, aged 30. Todd continued to compete at international level, after a few years out training racehorses. He took part in six more Olympics (Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, Beijing, London and Rio) and in 2011 won Badminton for the fourth time (his previous wins were in 1980, 1994 and 1996).
