Roadside Stories: Visiting Tarawera

A remote spot on the Napier–Taupō road, Tarawera was first a Māori village, then a military stockade and an important coach stop. Author Katherine Mansfield – then aged 19 – spent a night in Tarawera in 1907, and enjoyed bathing in the nearby hot springs.

Listen to a Roadside Story about Tarawera. Roadside Stories is a series of audio guides to places around New Zealand.
