From about 1897, as New Zealand became more prosperous, there was a widespread desire to endow cities with statues and monuments. The diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign in 1897 and her death in 1901, and the new enthusiasm for the British Empire unleashed by the South African War, led to seven memorials to Queen Victoria.
