The private car was the dominant means of transport throughout the country, but in Wellington, significant numbers travelled by bus or train on a well-developed public transport network. Healthy numbers of people walked to work in Otago, the West Coast, Nelson and Wellington, while the Tasman region was notable for its cyclists.
