Kōrero: Unpaid domestic work

Yates garden guide

The cover of the 1963 (42nd) edition of the Yates garden guide neatly shows how New Zealand gardens were divided into two parts. The front cover shows the wife with her flower beds in the front garden. The back has the husband harvesting carrots from the large vegetable garden behind the house. The vegetable garden in an urban or suburban quarter-acre section would provide most, if not all, of a family’s vegetables in the mid-20th century.
