Subscriber trunk dialing (STD)

From 1976 to 1978 STD (subscriber trunk dialing) was introduced. STD let telephone users make national and international calls without going through an operator. Installing STD equipment was a time-consuming business. The Wellington exchange contained 23 units that took the equivalent of 75 man-years to install.
