Electric power stations are found all over New Zealand. Many of the hydro stations were built in the mid-20th century. Some, like Mangahao, were built even earlier. With upgrading they remain efficient generators of cheap electricity. In the later 20th century thermal and geothermal stations were built in the North Island. Coal, gas and diesel powered their turbines.
