By the 1980s the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) had a network of research personnel based at properties across New Zealand. The goal was to address farming problems in all regions. Horticultural research was concentrated at Levin and Pukekohe, and viticultural research at Te Kauwhata. Some research centres had satellite stations at sites where the climate, terrain and soils were distinctive.
