Following a Treaty of Waitangi settlement, completed in 1998, Ngāi Tahu became the largest landowner in the South Island. This map shows the lands which were returned to the iwi under the settlement. The terms of the land transfers varied considerably. Some land was transferred in full ownership, some as leasehold, reserve land, or even land that remained in private hands but was managed by Ngāi Tahu.
