New Zealand’s oil production goes back to the early 1900s, but the amount produced was negligible until the 1970s, when the Kāpuni and Māui gas fields were opened. Although primarily gas fields, these reservoirs also produced some oil. While only a small proportion of overall production was oil, the size of these fields meant that the quantities retrieved were still considerable. Since the discovery of the McKee oilfield in 1979, other small oilfields have been found. The decline of the Māui field is evident in the falling total oil production in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
