This graph plots the mean monthly rainfall at Kaitāia in the far north, Kelburn in Wellington (central North Island), Lincoln near Christchurch (central South Island) and Dunedin further south. While rain falls evenly on the South Island sites throughout the year, both North Island places have significantly more in winter (June–August). This is because the rain-bearing westerlies move northwards in winter.
