This graph shows the number of deaths per 1,000 estimated population for those aged 65–79 between 1988 and 2018. Like other age groups, death rates for people aged 65 and over steadily declined during this thirty period. As the number of older New Zealanders increased, the proportion of deaths in this age group also increased —in 2018 those aged 65 and over accounted for 80% of all deaths, compared with 72% in 1988.
