Gross private capital formation, 1871–1900

This graph shows the four major types of private investment in New Zealand in the last three decades of the 19th century in 1885 pounds. Investment in agriculture, such as woolsheds or fencing, was fairly consistent during the period. Far more volatile was investment in people’s houses – the depression of the late 1880s and early 1890s was clearly reflected in a slump, which revived markedly in the last five years of the century.
