Distribution of household wealth, 2001

Distribution of household wealth, 2001

The 2001 household survey revealed considerable inequality in wealth in New Zealand. Almost half of the net wealth (48%) was owned by the top decile (10%) of households (defined as a couple or an individual without a partner). On average each household in the top decile owned $1 million. By contrast the bottom half of the households only owned 7% of the total wealth.
