Apprentices and industry trainees, 1930–2008

These graphs show how the numbers of apprentices and their present-day equivalents, modern apprentices and industry trainees, have varied over time. The Industry Training Act 1992 removed the traditional scheme, resulting in the gap in the upper graph. The Modern Apprenticeship scheme was launched in 2000. Modern apprentices are included in the figures for industry trainees.
