Motorcycle registrations grew steadily during the 1950s and 1960s. Registrations increased sharply in the 1970s, partly in response to high petrol prices – motorcycles are much cheaper to run than cars. Cars were also expensive at the time. During the early 1990s, when cheaper imported cars became available and petrol prices dropped, motorcycle registrations fell.
