These graphs show the increasing proportion of New Zealand dairy products in the world trade. In the first decade of the century, New Zealand exported much smaller volumes of butter and cheese than the Netherlands and Canada, and less butter than Denmark. But by the mid-1930s, the volume of both butter and cheese exported by New Zealand exceeded that of any other country. This achievement was in part a reflection of the work of the Department of Agriculture, which encouraged dairy farms at home and promoted the products abroad.
