This graph shows the increase in New Zealand’s Tongan-born population as immigrants entered in the 1970s and 1980s. In contrast, from the 1990s the community’s major growth was through the New Zealand-born children and grandchildren of those earlier arrivals. By 2018 New Zealand-born Tongans formed around 60% of the Tongan community in New Zealand. Figures for ethnicity are only available from 1991.
