State-owned enterprise Solid Energy, the successor to State Coal Mines, was producing about 4 million tonnes of coal a year in 2005, when the rising price of oil and the imminent exhaustion of Māui gas supplies made coal appear an attractive energy option. The major obstacle to future use was atmospheric pollution from coal-burning, and advertisements such as this one associated coal with bright, clear and clean air.
