In the era before gramophones (record players) were found in most households, people could listen to records in shops set up for that purpose. This 1920s advertisement for the Talkeries, in Wellington's Willis Street, shows that it sold records and equipment for playing them, but also played records on its own premises for listening and dancing to. At top left and right are free-standing gramophones, perhaps also combined with a radio. At lower right is a table-top gramophone. At lower left a family listens to a gramophone while a couple dances to its music.
