This poster advertises a gig by two Dunedin bands at the city's Crown Hotel in December 1992. The 3Ds had formed in 1988. Originally a three-piece outfit, their name was derived from the first letter of the names of three of the members – former Aucklanders Dominic Stones and David Saunders, and the only Dunedin-born member, Denise Roughan. They were soon joined by a fourth ‘D’, also from Auckland, David Mitchell. Like the other Dunedin groups who developed their distinctive sound in the early 1980s, the 3Ds recorded with Flying Nun. They continued to play until 1997. Chug were another Dunedin group, who formed in 1991 and recorded one full-length album with Flying Nun. Both Norma O’Malley, from Chug, and Denise Roughan had been in all-women Dunedin five-piece band Look Blue Go Purple, which released a series of EPs in the mid-1980s.
