A command performance

This poster advertises a vice-regal command performance of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Patience in May 1886. The orchestra, conducted by Hautrie West, was led by 'Master A. Hill' – later the well-known composer Alfred Hill. In his youth Hill learned the cornet, the violin and the viola.
