A prefect's badge

A prefect's badge

Hamilton Girls' High School handed out these badges to senior pupils who were made prefects in the 1970s. Prefects played an important role in enforcing school rules. One of the prefects' tasks was 'gate duty': standing at the school gates at home time to make sure all girls leaving were wearing the correct uniform, including hats and blazers. The reward was access during school hours to a special 'prefects' room' which had sofas, magazines and tea-making facilities.
