This Human Rights Commission poster from 1998 celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). New Zealand was involved in the United Nations General Assembly negotiations held in Paris from September 1948. These culminated in the adoption of the UDHR that December. Ann Newlands and Colin Aikman presented New Zealand's input to the declaration. They insisted that economic, social and cultural rights were as important as civil and political rights. In the image on the poster, Newlands (second from left) and Dutch delegate Marga Klompe (right) explain the meaning of the UDHR to a group of young visitors in November 1948.
