In New Zealand ideas of separate races were widespread until the mid-20th century. Māori were frequently described as a 'race', as in this 1904 book by Edward Tregear. Tregear himself came to believe that Māori were actually members of the Aryan group of peoples who had emerged in India and then spread westwards to Europe and east into the Pacific.
