Kōrero: Abortion

The first of several national abortion conferences was held in 1973. This leaflet advertises the National Women's Abortion Conference, which was probably held in 1976, after the election of a National government led by Robert Muldoon (shown on the far left of the leaflet’s cover). Prior to the 1975 election, the National Party promised that women’s rights would be more than ‘window dressing’. Once in power, the government proposed further restrictions on abortion.

Asking if women were to watch ‘the hypocrisy of male politicians deciding the abortion issue according to their “consciences”?’, the conference organisers called for ‘a strong, united campaign to demand the right to control our reproductive lives’.
