Pay As You Earn pamphlet

Under PAYE money is deducted directly from the pay packet of wage and salary earners. Before this people received the gross amount they earned, calculated their tax bill for the year, and the tax was due the following year, payable in a lump sum. This page from a PAYE pamphlet shows how much tax different incomes attracted in 1960.
