Montana was founded in 1944 by Ivan Yukich. In the early 1970s Frank, Ivan's son, put a deposit on 1,600 hectares of land on the Wairau Plain using his own money. He then told the Montana board what he had done. They opposed him at first, but luckily they later changed their minds.
