Subsidised fares for servants

This 1848 New Zealand Company poster offers a subsidised ship’s passage to domestic servants ‘of good character’. Young women prepared to work as domestic servants were among the most sought-after immigrants. They were offered subsidised passages by companies, provincial governments and later central government.
