The Department of Agriculture disappeared in 1972, and with the inclusion of fisheries management became the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF). Its extensive support for farming remained largely unchanged until 1984, when a radical withdrawal of services and financial assistance for farming began. Subsidies were removed and many services became cost-recovery operations. This affected the ministry, which underwent a series of restructurings in 1988, 1990 and 1992. The research functions were divested and the ministry became smaller and more focused on policy. Subsequently the ministry lost responsibility for fisheries, but gained forestry. This flurry of changes is reflected in the different logos used over the years since 1980.
