The Nelson Philharmonic Society advertised its third concert in the Nelson Examiner of 19 November 1853. The society, which had been founded the year before, was one of the first of its kind in New Zealand. Philharmonic societies typically presented programmes of both instrumental and vocal works, including orchestral pieces.
