John Alexander Wilson's 'Sketches of ancient Maori Life and History' columns, originally published in the Auckland Star, were collected into a book in 1897. This column is from 28 April 1894. Wilson spoke Māori, having grown up in New Zealand in the 1830s, and his work as a soldier, land purchase officer and Native Land Court Judge brought him into frequent contact with Māori. Wilson recorded a great deal of Māori information, but his interpretation of it was often somewhat eccentric.
