The New Zealand Illustrated Magazine

The New Zealand Illustrated Magazine

This is the May 1900 issue of the monthly New Zealand Illustrated Magazine. The use of Māori motifs reinforced the nationalist sentiment of the periodical. Its aim was to encourage local art and literature and it dealt with primarily New Zealand topics. But it was unable to compete against its overseas equivalents and folded after five years of publication.
