Marcilina, 1848

Marcilina, 1848

This advertisement for the first original play staged in New Zealand appeared in the Wellington Independent newspaper on 5 July 1848. It shows that Marcilina, or the maid of Urnindorpt was followed by songs, including some by the play's author, James Marriott. The evening concluded with a popular farce, already well known to British theatregoers. Marcilina was apparently well received by its Wellington audience.
