The Evening Post editorial for 15 January 1890 firmly rejects the claim of the Crown Prosecutor of Auckland that 29 January, the day Captain William Hobson arrived in the Bay of Islands in 1840, should be the anniversary of the colony rather than 22 January, the day the first New Zealand Company ship Aurora reached Wellington. To the distress of Wellingtonians, when it came to commemorating the 50th jubilee the official argument was decided in Auckland's favour by the governor, who declared 29 January a national public holiday.
