School of Art advertisement

This Canterbury College School of Art advertisement advises the 1887 reopening of the school. Among the subjects that students were to be taught was 'botanical drawing as applied to industrial design'. This might refer to the exquisitely detailed design to be observed in natural forms, or the way that botanical motifs were used to imbue manufactured products with the beauty of nature (particularly during the art nouveau period), or both.
