New Zealand Herald welcomes the 1905 All Blacks

This drawing appeared on the front page of a special supplement which the New Zealand Herald issued to mark the return of the 1905 All Blacks. New Zealand newspapers were very enthusiastic about the achievements of the team during its tour of the United Kingdom, and reported its return in very great detail. This was in striking contrast with the papers' inability to report in full the progress of the team as it went from success to success in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and finally France and North America. In Britain itself, as the New Zealand Times correspondent wrote, 'The newspapers, finding first-rate "copy" in these dashing footballers, have given an amount of space and discussion to their doings which the promoters of the tour could never, even in their most roseate dreams, have hoped for.' However, among the New Zealand papers only the New Zealand Times had a regular correspondent; the others had to rely on reprinting excerpts from the British media weeks after the event.
