Central Otago sports, 1863

In Central Otago in the early 1860s a range of sports occupied the largely male gold mining community on their days off. This description of games at the towns of Queenstown and Frankton shows that the sailing, racing, athletics and billiards which the men indulged in was largely an opportunity for gambling, often organised by local publicans.
