Kōrero: Colonial and provincial government

Around 500 people attended a banquet held in Dunedin at the end of October 1875 to protest against proposals to abolish the provinces. In his address George Grey, a former governor who had been elected superintendent of Auckland province, stressed the importance of local politicians keeping a ‘close watch’ over the fate of ‘waste’ (unappropriated) land in their areas.
