Kōrero: Governors and governors-general

In 1983 the government revoked the outdated letters patent from 1917 and the accompanying royal instructions that set out the governor-general’s powers and duties. In doing so, it ‘patriated’ the office, making it a New Zealand, not imperial, one – a status symbolised by the document being signed by a New Zealand prime minister for the first time.
