Excelling at catechism

Excelling at catechism

Presbyterianism placed great stress on the teaching of 'the word' (the Bible). Presbyterian children were sent to Sunday school to learn scripture (Bible texts) and catechism (the main principles of religion). Those who excelled in the annual general-assembly proficiency examinations won prizes. In 1905 May (Mary) McDonald, a 10-year-old from Waipū, won a first-class prize in catechism. Her prize was Peerless women: a book for girls, by Jeanie Douglas Cochrane, which included this bookplate.
