Temperance missionary Mary Clement Leavitt, from the Women's Christian Temperance Union of America, was reported to be ‘a very good instance of her theory of equality of woman with man in all matters in which it is not a question of superior physical strength’ (Temperance Herald, 1 June 1885, p. 87). She toured New Zealand at the same time as three other temperance speakers, and was by far the most successful. This advertisement for her meetings appeared in the Lyttelton Times in May 1885.
