New Zealanders’ British identity was expressed in a broad sense of racial superiority, obscuring the regional differences of Britain itself. The title of this history book, used for entrance examinations to the New Zealand public service in the 1930s, shows how important race was to the definition of the empire, while the map only just manages to include New Zealand.
